About Our Farm

Tucked away in Vermont’s Champlain Islands, our beginnings are rooted in Vermont dairy. The farm with which we share our name, Sunset Lake Farm, produces milk and cream for Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and is a long-standing member of their Caring Dairy program.

In 2021, Vermont legalized recreational cannabis for adult use, and Sunset Lake Cannabis was founded by the same farmers that brought you Sunset Lake CBD.

The team at Sunset Lake Cannabis brings a passion for sustainable agriculture to cannabis farming— careful to preserve our land for future use. We grow our cannabis crop under the Vermont sun with regenerative farming practices including Integrated Pest Management (IPM), cover-cropping and crop rotation. We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and we are now a Climate Neutral Certified company!

In 2023, we built a brand new energy-efficient warehouse and processing facility at our farm and we moved into our new manufacturing space right down the road.

As a cultivator and manufacturer, we are able to offer high-quality, sustainably-harvested, sun-grown cannabis at an affordable price!

Climate Neutral Certified

We’re proud to be Vermont’s first Climate Neutral Certified cannabis farm!

Climate Neutral Certified is the leading consumer label for climate neutrality. It’s earned by organizations and businesses that have chosen to be accountable for the greenhouse gas emissions generated in the production, operations, and shipping of their goods and services.

We view climate-neutral certification as an extension of our agricultural practices, really. Growing cannabis in the soil, under the sun and rain—it not only makes for great bud, but it also makes environmental sense. This year, we offset over 100 tonnes of carbon with a reforestation project. We hope to bring that number down in the coming years and even become carbon negative in the future.

Change Climate’s Climate Neutral Certification label builds on internationally recognized carbon measurement and neutrality standards. To maintain certification, all certified brands must measure cradle-to-customer greenhouse gas emissions each year. Then, a brand must commit to reduction action plans to cut future emissions within a 12-24 month timeline, reporting progress on those plans annually. Finally, certified brands must invest in eligible-verified carbon credits to compensate for 100% of their emissions, directing investment into critical projects that remove and avoid emissions. The brand’s certification data is publicly available on Change Climate’s website, and the process is repeated annually when companies must recertify.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is central to every decision we make at Sunset Lake Cannabis.

  • We believe that farming is an outdoor activity, so we cultivate and hand-harvest our crop in living soil under the sun, reducing our need for electricity and fossil fuels.

  • Sunset Lake Cannabis is now Climate Neutral Certified! In 2023, we partnered with Change Climate, an international non-profit, working toward our mutual goal of net-zero emissions and climate accountability.

  • Working in partnership with a local dairy farm and a nearby craft brewery, wefertilize our fields with a blend of nutrient-rich manure and spent brewing ingredients, reducing our need to truck in conventional fertilizers from out-of-state.

  • We employ Integrated Pest Management (IPM), using natural insect predatorsinstead of chemical insecticides.

  • We plant clover and timothy grass as a cover crop between our rows to maintain and regenerate healthy soils while providing a healthy habitat for pollinators & other native wildlife.

  • We practice crop rotation, allowing parcels of our field time to rest and regenerate before planting the next crop.

  • As farmers, we are also helping to grow our local community. We provide financial support to organizations working on equal human rights and mutual-aid disaster relief.

  • Through values-driven philanthropy, our sister company, Sunset Lake CBD, supports local and national non-profit organizations which advocate for reproductive rights, equal human rights, criminal justice reform, land stewardship, & emergency food relief.
